Mind the Gap challenged students to reimagine the functionality and identity of highway caps through the study of street corridors crossing Interstate 70 in downtown Columbus, Ohio. This studio tasked pairs to design a pedestrian crossing over I-70, rethinking and subverting traditional avenues in mending the cultural and physical division brought by the construction of the highway in the 1960s. VenVue took form as a celebration of the rich and vibrant entertainment scene intrinsic to the city’s identity. The bridge functions as a host of both active and passive entertainment program including theater + music shows (or practice), skateboarding, people watching, or the concert of the highway itself. The shape prompts surprise around every bend, playing with the scale of the spaces created by the radii of the meandering path and obscuring its audiences’ view with wild prairie plantings that embrace those passing through. Whether on a lunch break from your 9-to-5 or a local band looking for a spot to host your next show, VenVue offers a unique and romantic place to do so.
